A TEXT POST

Questing The most awesome thing you can do in everyday life

I started working part time with my dad. Building offices and such, it’s a good job and give you a workout with good pay. But the best part about the job is putting on the tool belt with the buckle at the front because that’s when it all starts. I have my hammer to the side, and pouches behind me, like a ninja or some sort of game character. Even when not working I find a way to make things fun, not for other people but for me, I live one world in while other people are affected and I live another one augmented on top. But it’s especially interesting at work.

So when I got my belt I imagined a sound effect with text saying “tool belt acquired”

Not only that but you pass by things that make it even more like a game, like searching for certain tools or materials, the second I say ok another text goes “Quest added”

And I get a lot of EXP by the end of the say to which I reflect back and learn new skills. From simple things like light stepping to avoid hazards, to ingenuity with ladders.

But it didn’t really hit me until today when they added doors, but they didn’t add handles or holes to open them and I had to go find something that was in three possible locations. So I navigated around and found what I was looking for, then I walked down to where the door was only from the other side so now could open it finding a quicker route back.

The second I did it I though “Area unlocked ‘Corridors’”

I know it might sound boring, but I’m easily amused. And that’s when I thought it be fun for todays gaming culture if there was an app that tracked quest data, exp, stats and inventory (optional).

This is just for shits and giggles, but I’d love to have an app like that.

But then, as I usually do with these kinds of seeds of thoughts. I took it either nearly or way too far. But this is just hypothetical.

Have a device that does these things. Register yourself and give yourself limited base stats. The device would have GPS that can be activated like a homing becon only it will give a quest icon, when highlighted will display basic information of the quest, I was thinking it would be cool to have everything on the GPS save the quest icons invisible until you walk to new areas then adding that part of the map to your index.

People who want things to be done for them can add a quest into the system and then activate whenever they feel comfortable, showing their position so that questers can come and ask about it. Rewards can be posted, as object or possible a paypal payment system, or credits to the system should something be available for them.

Different templates can be used for different people, that being hobbies. Like a parkour practitioner for example will not require the same template as say a geocacher. Levels will be related to their specific occupation and can have multiple ones for different hobbies as well as a basic one for the majority of people. I suppose slightly custom ones can be used.

And if you ask me, what’s the point in levels in this kind of game, I must ask, what’s the point of World of Warcraft. To show off your levels, but instead of something innate, it’s gained by helping real people.

Even if it isn’t used in everyday life I think it would be a hit at conventions.
